About the Role:

The South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO), a vital arm of the NRF, is seeking a motivated and skilled individual to join their team as a Junior Engineer specializing in Radio Frequency Interference (RFI). This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the groundbreaking Square Kilometre Array Radio Telescope (SKA) project, as well as other esteemed radio astronomy programs across the country.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Development, operation, and maintenance of RFI monitoring systems.
  • Analysis of RFI measurements, monitoring data, and telescope data.
  • Preparation and review of technical RFI reports.
  • Participation in RFI measurement activities.
  • Support and mentorship of graduates-in-training.

Key Requirements:

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.Eng or B.Sc) in Electrical, Electronics, or Computer Engineering (NQF 8) with a minimum of 2 years relevant experience.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Experience:

  • 2 years of experience in an RF environment.
  • Proficiency in processing or analyzing data using a programming language.
  • Experience in designing electronic circuits and working with RF electronics.
  • Programming skills in a relevant language.

Knowledge:

  • Understanding of EMC/RFI measurement principles.
  • Strong grasp of Radio Frequency (RF) concepts and signal propagation.
  • Familiarity with radio frequency hardware components and measurement data analysis.

Additional Skills:

  • Analytical problem-solving abilities.
  • Hands-on technical skills for field installations and commissioning.
  • Basic scripting proficiency for digital system configuration and analysis.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team.
  • Willingness to work in remote locations as needed.
